Building Museum by Ben Cruz
Nearly 10 months after its incumbency at Orchard Road, Goshen Art Gallery moves into yet another bigger space at Suntec City Mall. Located at the North Wing Atrium, the 1200sqft space allows Mr. Jack Yu, Director and Curator of Goshen Art Gallery, to organise art exhibitions and events at a spacious environment.
This exhibition features two very different styles and mediums by two artists, Ben Cruz and Lisa Huang. They each chose to express transformation, rebirth, new beginnings, new direction and metamorphosis. The exhibition explores creativity as a culturally rich and portable form of identity, transcending borders and locations through their own experiences and their imagination.
Born in 1954, Mr Benjamin F Cruz is a multi-award winning visual artist both in the Philippines and Singapore; including the 2015 UOB Painting of the Year, Singapore winner (Established Artist category). In his paintings, familiar landscapes morph into surreal worlds on canvas. The realistic-abstract painting techniques convey the distorted images of real-life objects and actual locations, which are layered with depictions from a different realm. Mr Cruz’s play on dimensionality and layering invites the viewers to familiar yet strange surroundings. Swirled up in a mix of colours, shapes and lines, we see common landmarks and objects, and human forms. Viewers are invited to step away from reality and dive into wondrous imaginary worlds of his paintings.

National Gallery Singapore by Lisa Huang
Ms Lisa Huang is an artist, printmaker and an interior designer with her own practise since 2003. Born 1977, she has always been in the creative scenes with heightened awareness to all things beautiful. She uses simple line techniques to draw and transfer her energy and emotions from within onto a physical surface; the most honest connection between human and the world we seek to represent. Her paintings are a consortium of lines that is used to record Singapore’s vivid streetscapes. Absorbing the streets’ sights, scents and sound, her works are made in-‐situ over 6 months of weekends. Lisa’s line work is clear-cut and intense, her works calling to mind dissected calligraphy characters amalgamated within sea of colours.
