Variations on a Theme is British artist Nick Grindrod’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Blending abstract geometry with vibrant colours, Grindrod’s work creates a visual symphony that invites viewers into a world of dynamic contrasts.
Grindrod’s artistic practice has often been likened to an archaeological excavation, in which he meticulously adds and removes layers of paint to reveal complex histories and textures reminiscent of the weathered bricks and exposed plaster of the industrial past of his home city, Sheffield. The tension between bold, clean-edged colour fields and distressed surfaces brings to light the variety of his influences, striving to reconcile hard-edge painting with the more painterly traditions of contemporary masters Lee Krasner and John Hoyland.
In Variations on a Theme, Grindrod explores this interplay of time and texture while experimenting with scale, showcasing pieces ranging from 30 x 20 cm to an impressive 200 x 300 cm. These compositions offer a comprehensive glimpse into his practice, a bold celebration of colours that sparks joy and nostalgia.
