Nyanyi Sunyi (Songs of Solitude) explores connections and misaligned relations enwreathed in the biographies of the artists’ multi-layered subjects—be it an age-old cultural practice, an itinerant revolutionary figure, or a life of urbanity and cross-border commuting. These disjunctures, and the concomitant articulation of differences and otherness, exert an existential shaping of experiences and relations that inform our identities and positions.
The exhibition borrows its title from Amir Hamzah’s notable collection of poetry that explores the state of self-yearning and reflection; here, the artists encapsulate such moments in abstraction, the intuitive grapple between the invisible and visible, revealing snippets of their own memoir.
