The late 19th and early 20th century were an exciting time for art in Europe, with the art scene developing at an astonishing pace not seen in other parts of the world. Many artists from Nanyang were attracted to Europe, travelling to her numerous culture capitals and soaking in their heritage, culture, and perspectives. Some of these artists returned to Singapore and Malaysia, pioneering the progress projects of their local art scenes with a new language that was influenced by the West. Old Continent, New Horizons is a showcase of works by artists that had journeyed to Europe in search of artistic inspiration, to broaden their horizons, and returned home to enhance Nanyang art.
