Plain Fancy is this year’s annual One Night Only (ONO) event by LASALLE’s McNally School of Fine Arts and managed by BA (Hons) Fine Arts students as part of their Artist as Curator elective taught by Shireen Marican and Hazel Lim.
Visitors are invited to explore the Winstedt Campus through activations, performances and artworks that navigate fluid aesthetic binaries like minimalism and maximalism, exuberance and restraint, and how our cultural backgrounds, identities and inherited knowledges shape our perceptions of these categories.
Questioning what we consider plain or fancy and inviting reflection on our own aesthetic preferences and their origins, the works presented in this exhibition emerge from semester-long investigations and explorations by BA (Hons) Fine Arts Year 2 and 3 students within their respective electives: ‘Performative Bodies’ by Ezzam Rahman, ‘Sensorial Technologies’ by Victoria Hertel, ‘Social Forms of Art’ by Alecia Neo, ‘Sound Art – A Mutual Tuning’ by Chong Li-Chuan, ‘Wearable Art’ by Khairullah Rahim and ‘Video Art’ by Urich Lau.
