Dan is an Australian artist whose practice has developed around investigating representations of the male form in painting and drawings. By deconstructing and reworking media and online images representing male identity and beauty within consumerist advertising culture, his works examine the effects these images have on our understanding of male body image and sexuality.
As a first-time solo traveller and visitor to Singapore, Dan’s perspective has been equally influenced by a sense of isolation and unfamiliarity as he explores and reflects upon his time away from home and the comfort of loved ones. This experience has challenged his sense of self, allowing his works here to take on more introspective questions, such as his relationship with his own body and his connection to a foreign place. While exploring the city, Dan found himself overwhelmed at times by the unexpected vastness of Singapore and its constant replacement of the old by the new, a theme interpreted through a recurring motif of empty reflections in his practice.
