P.U.R.E. Island Connections (Breathe. Move. Connect.)

Artist Marla Bendini is releasing “Tracks”, a soundtrack of improvised experimental guzheng, voice & site-specific ambient sounds recorded over the past year, with an installation of the artist’s visual/performance practice on life/death, stillness/improvisations & loss, loneliness & connections. Artist Joanna Chak will share her recent work on Pulau Ubin, speaking about establishing connections between people and nature, from living bud to detritus, from negative to positive space, and movements of consciousness within nature. Chaks’ installation takes elements of nature fallen to the floor and suspends them from trees, freezing a moment in time, arresting free fall to create jarring visual lines to highlight the beauty of nature in its inanimate form.

This exhibition will conclude the artists’ month-long reaidency but will also be one of the few final programming in Your MOTHER Gallery, which will be closing in a few months’ time. Sadly, this marks the end of a chapter in Singapore’s art history. Originated in the kitchen of the residence of artists Jeremy Hiah and Lina Adam, Your MOTHER Gallery was established on 31st Dec 2004 with a mission to provide an alternative and affordable art space. Subsequently, the gallery moved into the main hall of the flat. In the 12 years of its existence, Your MOTHER Gallery has hosted exhibitions by a slew of artists (emerging and established).

Your MOTHER Gallery is remarkably different from other art galleries because it is situated within the living room in the home of the artists. This gesture of sharing their personal space is a humble and meaningful one especially in the age of Singapore’s Renaissance where the arts are not encouraged to be ‘too humble’.

As emerging artists with the need to practice art often outside of conventional art spaces, mediums and presentations, Marla Bendini and Joanna Chak would like to thank Your MOTHER for the nurturing and supporting opportunity.
