“Perpetual Shift” is a solo exhibition by artist Mahalakshmi Kannappan. This immersive showcase places shadows – often dismissed as mere reflections – at the centre of our attention, transforming them into powerful, dynamic forces that redefine our understanding of light and darkness. Kannappan’s latest works, crafted from black lime plaster, charcoal, and wood, capture the transient beauty of shadows in their most fleeting moments, merging the delicate balance of presence and absence into stunning visual forms.
Drawing viewers into a poetic exploration of impermanence, Kannappan’s art becomes a storyteller of hidden dimensions — mysterious and elusive yet deeply resonant. Each piece in the exhibition challenges perception, inviting us to experience the silent drama unfolding at the threshold between light and shadow. Through bold textures, forms, and contrasts, Kannappan turns what is often overlooked into something worthy of contemplation, offering an intimate encounter with the fleeting forces that shape our everyday lives.
Taking the experience a step further, “Perpetual Shift” introduces “Luminous Intervals,” an interactive installation that breathes life into shadows, making them dance and shift in response to viewers’ movements. These living shadows, projected through lightboxes, evolve in real time, capturing the essence of memory and perception in constant unpredictability. As you move through the space, you become part of the art, witnessing firsthand the fluid interplay between light, shadow, and time. This dynamic extension adds a captivating layer to the exhibition, transforming it into a multisensory journey that redefines how we perceive the world around us. Engage with Kannappan’s evocative exploration of shadows — where the fleeting becomes eternal, and absence is filled with presence.
