Sabri Idrus returns to Gajah Gallery with a new series focusing on the concept of ‘power’. 12 new works (the largest spanning 4 metres in length) examine the abilities and limits of the artist, drawing attention to the decision-making process over when a painting can be seen as complete. In this fashion, these works are left as is: unsmoothed, raw, textured.
Not only highlighting the power of the artist, Sabri brings to the fore the power of the audience. The viewer takes part in the creative process, conjuring their own personal interpretations of the piece, which changes and evolves as one works through each section, leading up to a vision of the whole picture.
This fixation with completion, or rather duration, sees the artist reflect on the passage of time – our place in the present (‘now’) and at points in the future (‘there’). Meanings and purpose change with time; Sabri looks at humanity’s place in the future: one of constant evolution and limitless possibilities.
