The Bali trip of 1952 has long been regarded as the watershed of how “Nanyang” style helped to write Singapore’s art history at significant thresholds. This has evolved into an enduring legacy in visualising Bali in the decades that followed. This talk will showcase artworks against the backdrop of contemporary Bali to initiate conversations about how stories in art continue to reshape Singapore art history and the visual landscape as a beacon for Southeast Asia.
About the Speaker:
Bridget Tracy Tan is the Senior Director for the Art Galleries and the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Formerly a curator at the Singapore Art Museum (now National Gallery Singapore), she oversees the internal and external programming for three galleries located on campus. Her work at NAFA includes initiating practice-led research into Southeast Asian modern and contemporary art across the disciplines in seminars and workshops for students and lecturers alike. She has written and edited publications on art and for artists alongside exhibition projects.
Over the last two decades she has facilitated regional and international juries at competitions for photography and painting. She is also currently Academic Advisor for Southeast Asian Arts at NAFA-UAS. She continues to practice and research in this field of enquiry.
