Organized by The Ryan Foundation and supported by ShanghART Gallery Singapore, Re|Collecting Asia is a collectors’ exhibition curated by Khim Ong, currently the Deputy Director of Curatorial Programmes at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art. Re|Collecting Asia comprises of important pieces drawn from the private collections of Singapore-based art collectors.
The collectors involved in this exhibition include Jim Amberson, who showcases works such as the amazing rattan sculptures of Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich (1971, Cambodia) whose organic works have been collected by the Guggenheim.
Ann Mui Ling, whose generous contributions include a gift to the NUS Museum which enabled it to acquire an important suite of works by Singaporean artist Jimmy Ong (1964, Singapore), will be showcasing works by Jimmy Ong and also an important work by Singaporean artist Ming Wong (1971, Singapore) which was part of the Singapore Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 which was awarded a Special Mention. The work is a large old-style cinema billboard painted by one of the last remaining billboard painters Mr. Neo Chon Teck. Moreover, she will also show a diptych by Singaporean artist Genevieve Chua (1984, Singapore).
As a key Asian art collector and museum supporter, Satesh Kumar collects notable international names but is also dedicated to supporting young emerging artists. As a Singaporean, he is proud to present a work by Robert Zhao Renhui (1983, Singapore) who is known for his unique docu-photography that challenges the boundary between fact and fiction and which work was featured in the 2016 Sydney Biennale, and two abstract and phantasmagoric paintings by Peybak (Peyman Barabadi & Babak Alebrahim Dehkordi, 1984, Iran) whose works are collected by the Fondation Louis Foundation and being publicly shown in Singapore for the first time.
Mr and Mrs Stephen Ng, who started collecting Chinese and Indonesian contemporary art during their stint in Hong Kong, will be showing works by Handiwirman Saputra (1975, Indonesia) and Xue Song (1965, China). Ryan Su and Adrian Chan will be showcasing the works of Xu Zhen (1977, Shanghai), a Chinese contemporary artist whose humorous and provocative works have been also collected by the Foundation Louis Vuitton.
This will be the first collectors’ exhibition at Gillman barracks. Re|Collecting Asia is an opportunity for Singapore collectors to share their private collections with the public, and not have their artworks stowed away in warehouses. It also shows their support and pride for the artists in their collections. As co-organisers of the Collectors’ Show, ShanghART and The Ryan Foundation hope more collectors will come forward to showcase their works and to inspire the public.
