On showcase are 20 works including abstract compositions, shophouse scenes and the artist’s recent neo-cubist treatment of local heritage buildings. Of special highlight is a 105 x 104 cm work titled, 直面惨淡的人生. Loosely translated as “to face the bleakness of life squarely”, the brassy use of colours in this painting mimicking graffiti is surely a clear departure from Chua’s signature depiction of poetic back alleys – the artist’s visual stance reflecting the harshness of reality often experienced living in a fast-changing cityscape. Rhythmic Compulsion is part of a joint period of exhibition programmes for this December organised by Bras Basah Complex Galleries.
