It could be said that longing is a symptom of the human experience. Our bodies, lingering in the present, constantly desire what we do not possess. It may seem as if we are grasping at some other realm, which we do not have access to. The practice of painting is an act of alchemy, transforming what is formless and commonplace into visions which point to something more transcendental. This solo exhibition, Roads Around A Mountain, by Ivan David Ng addresses our restless natures as human beings. Reflecting on the prolonged amount of time spent in a single place and longing for a world beyond, the artist incorporates materials derived from Google maps, landscape photographs and collected ephemera into his paintings. Ng’s works speak about an elusive place that embodies true and perfect rest, seen only in snapshots and fragments; a mountain that cannot be climbed. His paintings pave roads around this mountain, offering a glance into a secret world.
