Captivated by the symbolic nature of antique wooden moulds and brass stampings, Shayne Phua explores the flexibility of ceramic as a medium and experiments with the arrangement of forms in ‘Sehnsunct’, her debut solo exhibition.
‘Sehnsucht’ acknowledges the existence of complex and indefinite emotions and the longing of nostalgia in our current age of rapid change. For the artist, it means the yearning of an imagined zeitgeist, vicarious reminiscence and feelings from idealising periods of her life she wishes to return.
‘Sehnsucht’ also questions the pressing need to learn from and remember the past to understand uncertainties. These are explored through the arrangement and combination of pastries as ornaments and emblems in retelling stories, including oral traditions, in the hope to bridge the past and present through heart-to-heart conversation.
