Michael Eko
Shared Currents is the Silvana S Photography Award Exhibition. Established by the Silvana S. Foundation in 2020, the award recognises Southeast Asian photography projects that champion environmental and youth causes. This recipient of this year’s award is Michael Eko, an Indonesian documentary photographer, whose works focuses on environmental transformations, sociocultural conditions, and other overlooked narratives.
Rivers have long shaped human histories. They sustain life, provide fertile grounds for agriculture, and facilitate trade and cultural exchange that have given rise to cities and empires. Shared Currents traces these living threads through Michael Eko’s ongoing project Kapuas Mahakam and a selection of Silvana Sutanto’s photographs of the Asmat people from Agats. Beyond carrying people and goods, these rivers transport stories, knowledge, memory, and collective imagination, revealing how indigenous communities respond to ecological change through resilience and continuity.
