‘Shoe Shufflers’, the debut solo exhibition by Faris Heizer, explores the anatomy of routines that are shaped by expectations from oneself and societal norms from spectators in a conformist ecology. Recent times have rewritten standard operating procedures of productivity and placed individuals at precarious crosswalks. As one ponders their next step, predisposed responses include anxiety, restlessness, and back and forth shuffling between existing reality and an acceptable ideal future.
The momentum of shuffling is repetitive and confines the body to limited space and boundaries. It draws parallels to excelling school exams, partaking monotonous work commutes, and ultimately fostering a nuclear family. Should there be deviations from pre-existing configurations, it triggers profound unease in one’s mind and provokes a series of questions that are difficult to answer. The ‘shuffler’ explores the binary relations of mundaneness and anxiety, which is accelerated at times of global disruptions.
