Singapore Biennale 2016 – Hearings

Hearings (2016) by Singaporean artist Jack Tan is a mixed media art installation consisting of textile and auditory elements, which examines the experiences of litigants-in-person at the State and Family Courts of Singapore. The project was conceived as part of his artist-in-residence programme with the Community Justice Centre (CJC). Melding art and law together to explore the concept of “legal aesthetics”, Tan attended court proceedings, listened to the soundscapes of the courts – voices, in particular- and documented what he heard as drawings. He then translated these drawings into graphic scores, which would be interpreted and sung live by the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Alumni Choir. An adapted presentation will continue at SAM at 8Q from 30 October onwards.
