Singapore Pok Kai Zai: Outsider Comics in Singapore

View a decade of fringe culture comics by Ye Zhen, creator of Singapore Hip-Hop Horror Comics Series. Set in a dystopian urban jungle of Singapore, Ye zhen describes in glorious detail a tale of shock, violence and gore with familiar backdrops and references inspired by pop culture and rap music blended with local Hokkien slang and culture.

Published independently since its inception and sold at fairs and bookshops, the series has thus far eluded local fame and adoration but found international recognition, with Ye Zhen and Cheng Tju appearing on a panel at the New York Comics and Picture story symposium in 2018.

This two-day pop-up gallery at Pearl’s hill terrace on the 29th and 30th of June features selected original hand-drawn panels from the entire series as well as full-colour artworks revealed for public viewing for the first time. Ye Zhen and Lim Cheng Tju will also present a panel on outsider comics culture in Singapore on Saturday, with a follow-up panel on indie comics publishing between Ye Zhen and Derek Chua of Irrational Comics.
