Space Drawing No. 12 – 155 Middle Road is a new site-specific work created at the titular historical site. Sai (Chen Sai Hua Kuan) plays with the energy released by bungee ropes pulled from wall to wall, from floor to ceiling, from inside to outside of the space. His Space Drawing series comprises experimental and multi-disciplinary installations and film work exploring the idea of the simplest but most fundamental function of a line — to divide, subtract and define a space.
Like many buildings in Singapore, 155 Middle Road has been repurposed often, serving various communities during different periods. Its rich history and multifaceted identities as the Christian Institute, the Methodist Girls’ School, the Straits Chinese’s first Methodist Church, the May Blossom Restaurant, a car workshop, Sculpture Square, and now Objectifs, reflect the country’s economic, political and cultural conditions over time. In and around these buildings that have borne witness to ever-constant change in Singapore, Space Drawing No. 12 – 155 Middle Road is a drawing, film, performance and spatial sculpture that offers a slice of suspended time.
