Sweet Spots is the third solo exhibition of watercolourist Tay Zhiyong. It presents fourteen of Zhiyong’s studio-painted artworks created between 2019 and 2022.
The body of exhibited artworks presents his continual quest to document various spots in Singapore that tug at his heart strings. These “Sweet Spots” of Singapore range from iconic landmarks to almost mundane-looking urban landscapes that the artist sees in his day-to-day life as an average Singaporean.
Zhiyong seeks to subtly re-interpret each of the scenes that he paints to express the atmospheric mood or essence of the place. His painting style also varies according to subject matter and mood: from a controlled and more considered approach, to an absolutely fast and loose “playful” style.
Sweet Spots is also the artist’s little tribute to his motherland Singapore, his quiet protest that it is not a boring nation state.
