
‘Monsieur Lazhar’ was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012. The screening will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion with established writers – namely two-time Singapore Literature Prize winner Yong Shu Hoong, as well as Ann Ang and Genevieve Wong, and SWF’s newly-appointed Festival Director, Yeow Kai Chai. The discussion aims to offer insights into the film’s themes.

Synopsis: At a Montréal public grade school, an Algerian immigrant is hired to replace a popular teacher who committed suicide in her classroom. While helping his students deal with their grief, he has to face his own painful past.
