Wood, clay, and fire undergo a long process inside the kiln — one that can never be completely controlled. Ash settles naturally on the surface of the vessels, melting at high temperatures into a natural glaze, while flames move repeatedly across the clay, leaving layers of colour and texture.
For Teppei Ono, wood firing is not about achieving a particular “effect.”
Every firing carries chance, failure, and outcomes that cannot be predicted. The relationship between the maker and fire is not one of control, but of continuous response.
What he does is return, again and again, to clay and fire — and accept what they ultimately become.
The roughness, weight, and even apparent imperfections of these surfaces hold within them the time and presence of fire itself.
