The Art of Subtraction is an exhibition featuring the latest works of ceramic artists Katsunori Sawa and Makoto Yamaguchi. Following their previous joint exhibition in 2023, this new showcase explores the Japanese aesthetic of “subtraction,” a value that lie at the heart of our appreciation for craft.
Both artists were invited to interpret the theme freely, resulting in a collection of works that reflect their unique artistic journeys. Highlights include Sawa’s new works in Shigaraki, Yobitsugi, and Oribe styles, such as tea bowls with faceted surfaces that emphasize the act of deliberate removal. Yamaguchi introduces new silhouettes in his signature Rinpa Oribe and Oribe styles, including bold flower vases that possess a strong sculptural presence.
