For a thousand years, painters worked by lamplight on the walls of the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang, creating some of the greatest Buddhist paintings ever. But what we see today is faded and damaged by time.
Shi Dunyu, born in Dunhuang to parents who dedicated their lives to preserving these caves, paints the apsaras and murals as they were. Her work is a careful, scholarly restoration that brings the original colors and missing details back to life, following the ancient Chinese idea of “transmit, do not invent”.
