The Families, Out of Law

Nguyen Quoc Dzung Immigrant’s family # 16,2020, Oil on canvas

The Families, Out of Law exhibition brings together four artists around an exploration of the diverse forms of families including those who are unprotected/underprivileged by law due to difference. Various family types including refugee, LGBT+, and immigrant families, are often pushed out of medical, educational, housing and social benefit realms, rendered invisible in the very society we live together in, due to family regulations being confined to static frameworks of marriage and blood ties.

Displaying primarily works on photograph, an installation, and paintings, the exhibition prompts one to explore the theme of family in an extended field by challenging traditional ways of conceptualising family. As such, viewers are led to question what family today means and the authorities’ ability to reposition alongside alternative concepts.
