What is artistic research? Which are the material and immaterial aspects that constitute contemporary art practices? Within the context of The Making of an Institution, Artist-in-Residence siren eun young jung addresses the notion of artistic research as well as the process of art-making in relation to her long-term research into Yeosung Gukgeuk. Yeosung Gukgeuk is a form of traditional Korean theatre featuring only female actors that developed at the end of the 1940s and became extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s, during the modernisation of South Korea. Over the years, jung has produced a multiplicity of works around this subject to challenge cultural expectations and gender politics in Korean society.
