In this exhibition, The Nanyang Space Tour Exhibition (南洋空间巡回展), Tan Ruirong features over 30 stunning pieces that are a perfect symphony of western painting techniques and strong oriental hues that resemble Chinese calligraphy. He is known for incorporating the “glyph painting” literacy method that uses the external space form of simplified Chinese characters as the object of shaping and traditional Chinese elements that provide viewers with the opportunity to appreciate Chinese characters. Aptly named, this series of Nanyang style paintings explores space, lines and colours that will leave viewers with infinite imagination.
Born in 1963 in Guiyang, China, Tan Ruirong has resided in Singapore for 25 years. The award-winning artist, notably a Silver Award Winner for 2013 UOB Painting of the Year, has participated in several art exhibitions in Singapore, with the most recent showcase Evocation of Space held at UOB Art Gallery. Apart from being an artist, Tan Ruirong is a lecturer at Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS), committee member of Federation of Arts (Singapore) and Singapore Literature Society, Vice Chairman of Arts Theatre of Singapore Ltd, judge for several national writing competitions and an arts consultant.
Part of the proceeds from this exhibition will be donated to ArtSE, a social enterprise which focuses on cultivating an all-inclusive community by empowering seniors, low-income, special needs and underprivileged families through visual arts or art related activities.
