“The Quiet Revolutionary: Chua Ek Kay” is a solo exhibition dedicated to the late Singaporean artist and Cultural Medallion recipient Chua Ek Kay. Hailed as the bridge between Eastern and Western artistic traditions, Chua forged a distinctive visual language that expanded the possibilities of contemporary Chinese ink painting. Bringing together 51 creations spanning three decades of the artist’s practice from the 1980s until his passing in 2008, the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of Chua’s artistic evolution. From 25 July to 23 August 2026, visitors are invited to experience a curated presentation of Chua’s celebrated street scenes and lotuses, alongside rarely exhibited abstracts, landscapes, and still lifes at the gallery located at 2 Havelock Road, #02-29 Havelock 2, Singapore 059763.
The Quiet Revolutionary: Chua Ek Kay traces Chua’s transformation from an artist grounded in traditional Chinese ink to an innovative artist renowned for challenging its conventions. While he continually experimented with abstraction, composition, colour, and Western artistic influences, the Zen-inspired stillness and contemplative qualities of Chinese ink painting remained fundamental to his practice. Through this quiet yet radical reinvention, Chua developed an artistic language that was unmistakably his own.
