In the island-state of Singapore, lands and space are framed as scarce, limited resources whose value is measured against efficiency and economic progress. How can we reconsider the notion of space beyond its economic value? How may we attune to relational, experiential, and sensorial dimensions through which space is lived and felt?
The worlds we traverse, the worlds that linger takes up these questions through a visual study of our homes and their traces. Bringing together works by artists Lavender Chang, Chen Jialu, Geraldine Kang, Michael Lee and Wei Leng Tay, alongside poems and writing excerpts from the Migrant Writers of Singapore community, the exhibition attends to the affective textures of domestic space in Singapore. It gathers stories, memories and reflections from everyday lives, through which the boundaries between the personal and the national, the past and the present, begin to dissolve. Here, home is constantly shifting: it is the corner of society where power and ideology are negotiated, and at times even contested. It is a constellation where our sensations, dreams and relationships are charted. It is a close-up shot of the worlds we encounter and of the ones that linger. It is a story of many stories.
