Celebrating 25 years of theatre making in 2015, leading local bilingual theatre company Toy Factory Productions is pleased to announce its opening act for 2015; Titoudao. Widely-regarded as a masterpiece and one of the stalwart company’s eponymous works, Titoudao is a befitting nod and homage to the illustrious record of Toy Factory Productions which has remained steadfast in its efforts to champion an ‘Asian theatre’ sensibility.
Written and directed by Chief Artistic Director Goh Boon Teck, this timeless original play puts the spotlight on the fading traditional art of street wayang or theatre. It has garnered various accolades locally – including Best Original Script and Play of the Year at the inaugural Life! Theatre Awards organised by The Straits Times, and played to standing ovations in cities such as Cairo, Beijing and Shanghai among others. Titoudao’s distinct Singaporean brand of humour, cultural references, as well as nostalgic portrayal of life in Singapore in the past have struck a chord with both local and international audience alike.
Presented in Mandarin, Hokkien and English, Titoudao is inspired by the real life story of Chinese street opera actress, Madam Oon Ah Chiam; a petite lady with big dreams. Through her struggles – including poverty, gender inequality and marital issues, she rises to become an outstanding opera artiste best known for her role as an incorrigible yet likeable character, Titoudao. Set in the 1960s, the production presents a ‘play-in-a-play’; alternating between scenes of Madam Oon’s painful personal life and her colourful stage persona. Titoudao’s storyline also mirrors the societal and economic changes in fast-developing Singapore at the time.
