TREASURES Jakarta Fine Art Auction

Arie Smit, In a Bali Village, 1990, Acrylic on canvas, 35 x 50 cm

A wide range of collections of modern and contemporary art will be presented at TREASURES Jakarta Fine Art Auction, such as works from Lee Man Fong, Ahmad Sadali, Basoeki Abdullah, Arie Smit, Mochtar Apin, Dede Eri Supria. M. Irfan, Teguh Ostenrik and also Dutch painters like Gerard Pieter Adolfs, CL. Dake and many more.

One of the highlights is Arie Smit’s painting titled In a Bali Village, which describes the artist’s personal experience of travelling through different villages across the island over the decades. A Dutch born artist, Arie Smit became an Indonesian citizen in 1951. He first visited Bali in 1956 and decided to live on the island since then.

Having received the Dharma Kusuma award from the government of Bali in 1992, Arie has created and developed a naive style of painting that became his own style. He portrays his deep admiration for the beauty of Bali, its temples, life and people in vibrant colors and light compositions.

Dede Eri Supria, Penunggang Kuda dari Amerika / A Cowboy from America, 1992, Oil on canvas, 134 x 139 cm

Another work also featured in this auction is A Cowboy from America from Dede Eri Supria, depicting the hegemony of foreign cultures. Known as a super realist or hyper realist painter, Dede often pictures how urban lifestyle has become a complex social issue. The painting shows how Jakarta looks very American with symbols of western culture.
