“Unfettered Brush: The Art and Writings of Tan Joo Jong” explores Tan’s dual career as artist and journalist in post-independence Singapore. Born in 1951, Tan’s formative years coincided with Singapore’s search for cultural identity. His involvement with the Nanyang University Student Art Society from the late 1960s to early 1970s fostered artistic experimentation and intellectual growth. The transformation of his artistic style from realist to abstract and impressionist forms, and the shift from Western media to East Asian ink, is a reflection of the artistic and intellectual freedom he cultivated in his practice.
