Tang Contemporary Art Singapore presents Universe’s universe, the first solo exhibition in Singapore by Korean artist Woo KukWon, featuring approximately 22 new paintings created for this occasion. The exhibition marks an important moment in the artist’s evolving practice, shaped by a turn toward intuition, sensation, and emotional immediacy.
The title Universe’s universe refers both to the cosmic scale of the unknown and to the artist’s daughter, Universe (우주), whose presence quietly transformed the way he approaches painting. Her instinctive, unfiltered perception of the world led Woo to distance himself from fixed narratives and controlled compositions. Instead, he began to paint from a place of rawness and feeling, where form gives way to atmosphere and meaning emerges through emotional resonance rather than structure.
This new body of work does not attempt to illustrate the child or her world, but rather reflects the shift she provoked. The works are intuitive, open-ended, and psychologically charged — offering entry points for emotional recognition without demanding literal understanding.
