Winner of the prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2006, Nimmalaikaew has established himself as one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting new generation artists. By painting over layers of carefully draped thread and netting, he has developed a unique mixing of media that produces mesmerizing three-dimensional, ‘holographic’ artworks, often portraits of his own family members. A devout Buddhist, Nimmalaikaew’s distinct style illustrates the inevitable cycle of birth, aging, and death in all our lives, as explained in Buddhist philosophy. Dimension of Hope continues to explore these themes, while introducing the artist’s newly developed technique of framing his mixed media works within a clear acrylic encasement that further elevates the appearance of weightlessness and incorporeality of the artist’s portraits.
