Virtuoso in Ink, jointly presented by Art Agenda, S.E.A. and Chan + Hori Contemporary, brings together a cross‐generational group of Singapore artists working in the medium of Chinese ink. More than a medium, ink art has often been understood as a signifier for a Chinese literati‐oriented philosophy and way of life amongst other aspects. In its essence, ink marks an expanse of black against a white ground but as ink art is diverse in its expressions, so understanding it in black and white forms merely part of a broader story. For the 6/7 artists whose works are exhibited, working with ink is principally an exercise in the virtuosity of expression, gestural expression, expression of a concept and philosophical viewpoint, a memory or simply of a touching reality. Their works create an enlarged realm of understanding and engagement with the world.
