iPreciation is delighted to present Where the Sun Sets 《夕陽醉了》 – A Solo Exhibition by Koo Mei featuring treasured works from 1978 – 2018 by the former starlet turned prominent ink artist and a rare ink painting dated 1993 by Zao Wou Ki (in exchange for her work). After 21 years since her last solo exhibition with iPreciation, this exhibition opens doors to the artist’s otherworldly realm and invites visitors to discover the grace of Koo’s ethereal visual haven.
Born into a scholarly family in Guangzhou in 1929, Koo Mei showed a flair and expressed interest in art since young, yet did not pursue art due to financial reasons. She entered Hong Kong’s booming entertainment industry and rose quickly to fame with her good vocals and acting in the 50’s. Though having a successful career in the entertainment industry for two decades, Koo eventually came to realise the limelight was not a suitable path to be continued; she heeded the call of her heart and devoted herself to painting.
Drawing upon traditional medium and stunning Western nature wonders, Koo’s paintings, characterised by a distinctive mix of teal and amber, exude a remarkable sense of etherealness and tranquillity. Today, at the age of 92, Koo’s works are in the collection of numerous respected private collectors, along with major corporations, museums, galleries and institutions, including Hong Kong Museum of Art, State University of Utah, the Canadian Consulate General, Bank of America, Bank of Australia, Citibank, Hutchison Global, Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Private Limited and Legislative Council of Hong Kong, as well as seen in auctions.
