Yang Maoyuan: Unforeseen Encounters is the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Singapore. Featuring a new body of paintings and sculptures, this exhibition brings together works from the Pot People, Balloon People, and Faces series, introducing Singapore audiences to one of the most influential figures in post-1989 Chinese contemporary art.
For more than three decades, Yang Maoyuan has developed a practice that draws from archaeology, history, travel, and observation. Working across painting and sculpture, he has established a distinctive visual language shaped by research into ancient cultures, extensive journeys across China and Asia, and an ongoing interest in how people relate to place, memory, and material culture.
The exhibition brings together three bodies of work that reflect different aspects of Yang’s practice. The Pot People paintings combine the form of the vessel with the human figure, drawing on references to ritual objects and archaeological artefacts while suggesting ideas of identity and cultural continuity. The Faces and Balloon People series revisit prehistoric imagery and early forms of human expression through contemporary painting and sculpture. Throughout the exhibition, colour and light are informed by Yang’s observations of places including Xinjiang, Central Asia, India,
and Mexico, where changing landscapes and local environments have influenced his approach to composition and form.
