Between The Lines is Yu Loon Ching’s first solo exhibition, who is at the age of 83. The exhibition comprises 40 mostly black-and-white works in ink he created with a ballpoint pen.
His painting Six Faithful Dogs evolved from Mr Yu’s great interest in Borneo’s traditions, nature and the state of society. In this piece of work, Mr Yu has stylised the bond between man and dog, in a dreamy black-and-white setting. He portrays how dogs are man’s best friend and will protect him and his interests.
Mr Yu began painting in the early 1950s when he was a secondary student in a Kuching Mission school and an active member of the then Kuching Art Club in Malaysia. He was the Honorary Secretary of the Club for seven years and continued pursuing his passion for art as a typography and fine arts student at the Wellington Technical College in New Zealand, under the Colombo Plan, from 1960 to 1961.
