Lee Kuan Yew: Through Another Perspective is the first solo exhibition of Indonesian artist Agung Santosa. An opening reception will be held at Art Xchange Gallery from 6.30pm to 9pm on Thursday, June 25th; and guests are invited to take part in a Q&A session with the artist. The exhibition will remain on view till July 25th.
Lee Kuan Yew: Through Another Perspective features a series of latest works by Agung Santosa depicting images of Singapore’s founding father from various angles and at various stages of his life.
During his trip to Singapore in early April this year, Agung witnessed, and was immediately intrigued by the outpouring of grief for the passing of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. Agung was thus inspired to embark on his own exploration of the respected statesman and his extraordinary leadership.
Curated in a chronological order, Agung Santosa unveils Singapore’s founding father’s journey from a pugnacious and iron-fisted young leader to a calm and cool-headed stateman. Alternatively each of these works serves as an expression of utmost admiration Agung has for the late leader; and a whirlwind of mixed sentiments coexisted in the artist’s mind regarding the passing of Mr. Lee. With a clever manipulation of famous wise words delivered by Lee Kuan Yew, Agung attempts to render an overall silhouette of undeniable intelligence and dignity.
Agung Santosa, currently residing in Jogyakarta, is a self-taught artist whose canvases never fail to exude powerful and irresistable seduction. As a person who has a very sophisticated mind, it’s not a supprise for his works to always possess significant philosophies. Hence, most of Agung’s paintings are the reflection of his true self and daring imagination.
