by Takako Matsumoto
Includes post-show Q&A with director Takako Matsumoto and exhibition curators Russell Storer and Adele Tan
This documentary observes avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama at work, as she completes a series of 50 large monochrome drawings entitled Love Forever for an exhibition in New York (and which will also be exhibited at National Gallery Singapore), makes cameo celebrity appearances on TV, and receives her country’s pre-eminent cultural award – the Praemium Imperiale – from the emperor of Japan.
Filming over a period of 18 months, director Matsumoto gets up close and personal with the artist. Through the casual interviews, poetry recitations by Kusama and conversations between the artist and her collaborators in the film, viewers will also be able to appreciate the source of her eccentricities, self-obsession and above all, intense dedication to her art.
