From the 7th to the 14th of December, Artspace@Helutrans hosts a showcase of five private collections featuring twenty-five contemporary artists engaging with the theme of change and identity.
The convergence of five different private collections in one showcase creates an space for conversations between different narratives and viewpoints. The variety of techniques explored range from painting and sculpture to photography, performance, videos and digital works. The juxtaposition of works by artists hailing from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, United States, India, Japan, Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong, Vietnam, France, and Indonesia makes the exhibition a truly cosmopolitan meeting point of geographical perspectives.
The show features works by an impressive breadth of artists and studios from around the world: Yee I-Lann, Mawen Ong, Yang Jiechang, Theaster Gates, Asim Waquif, Kohei Nawa, Wolfgang Tillmans, Olafur Eliasson, Hung Fai, Melissa Tan, Yan Heng, Wawi Navarozza, Perception3, Martha Atienza, TeamLab, Dinh Q Le, Guillaume Gelot, Melati Suryodarmo, Zhang Dali, Yang Yongliang, Koon Wai Bong, Travess Smalley, Mark Hagen, Jigger Cruz, John Santos.
The title of the exhibition, Alchemy, recalls the ancient quest that for centuries fascinated scientists and intellectuals: unlocking the secret to turn lead into gold. The task of testing the dynamics of change and transformation is passed from the hands of the chemist to those of the artist, who uses the tool of creative imagination as a Philosopher’s Stone to sublimate the lowly into the sublime. Through the power of art practice, artists explore the interplay between raw and refined, manipulating ordinary materials like charcoal, wire and steel to imbue them with meaning.
