Wang Min was born in 1986. She graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts, South China Normal University in 2011.
Since Wang Min’s first encounter with contemporary art at college, she never stopped her exploration of artistic creation. The teaching of contemporary vision and concepts at South China Normal University, the study of social phenomena as well as the in-depth reflection of her personal experience all bestow Wang Min the courage and passion for contemporary art. She likes to experiment with various mediums which give her artworks a changeable style, characterised by unrestrained imagination and elusive myth.
In her own words, she explains that fine art must help us get rid of fixed ways of seeing, thinking and doing, for even just a moment. “It’s as if we are living in a labyrinth of perplexities, not knowing where we are, and only by a clear self-recognition and a break from fixed norms can we be truly alive.”
Throughout many of her portrait themed works, her paintings show the different and rich contemporary female states of mind. The portrayals of female eyes display different emotions. Sometimes they are strong, sometimes they are ambiguous, sometimes they are flexible, and sometimes pure. Wang Min uses her brush to express the feelings in this world.
Wang Min’s works bring their greatest reception with the younger generations of China who connect with her effective and positive vision of contemporary China. She has moved beyond the stationary thinking and typical behavior of traditional portraiture by creating the ethereal images that translate inner movement and ambiguity, expressing her own deep reflections.
