20/20: Twenty Masterpieces that shaped 20th Century Art

Professor and art critic Ruben de la Nuez will take us through the historical contexts and concepts behind twenty masterpieces that defined 20th century art. In a chronological fashion, the lecture will cover groundbreaking artworks while unfolding a narrative about the most important artistic movements of the pass century.

An initial session, dedicated to the first half of the century, will include analysis to Modern Art pieces by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Kazimir Malevich, Salvador Dalí and Jackson Pollock. Among the artistic movements covered during this session are Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism.

A second half of the talk will concentrate on Contemporary Art’s masterpieces by artists such art Piero Manzoni, Joseph Kosuth, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Cindy Sherman and Damien Hirst. The selected artworks will reflect some of the essential movements, issues, and concepts in contemporary art, such as conceptualism, performance and performativity, site-specificity, video art as television critique, feminism, post-modernism and the end of ideology, and bio-aesthetics.
