UNTAPPED is an exhibition series that was launched in 2016 by the Visual Arts Development Association, Singapore. It adopted the form of an open call, reaching out to emerging local or Singapore-based artists with up to four years of professional practice who had their submissions evaluated by an Advisory Committee of distinguished art and culture professionals such as Michelle Ho, Director of the Art, Design and Media Gallery at the Nanyang Technological University, who curated the Singapore Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. If selected, the artists were acquainted with a gallery and guided through how to create works for an exhibition – gaining firsthand experience into the art world and its processes.
However, the true factor that distinguished UNTAPPED from other art programmes in search of talented emerging artists was its commitment to matching artists with patrons, even before the artworks were produced. Local patrons provided upfront funding for the exhibition series, with the knowledge and trust that they would collect at least one artwork at the launch of the show – allowing the works of young artists to automatically enter the collections of respected art patrons.
