Opera Gallery Singapore is delighted to present 20th and 21st Century Icons, an ode to modern and contemporary art and artists across the globe from this defining period in art history. With works from eleven of the art world’s favourite artists, this exhibition illustrates the traversing aesthetic influence that these masters have over art to this day. The artworks on display champion the diverse creativities and experimentations of various art styles throughout the eras.
Pop artists challenge the traditional aspects of fine art with their undeniably eclectic and experimental spirit by using imagery from popular and mass culture. Selected pieces from widely recognised names like Keith Haring, KAWS, Tom Wesselmann, Julian Opie, Kenny Scharf, George Condo, Alex Katz and Yayoi Kusama will bring life to the exhibition with their bright colours and even brighter ideas. From Haring’s iconic style of visual storytelling, Opie’s unique style of graphic figuration, Kusama’s iconoclastic experimentations with dots and patterns, to Katz’s distinctly stylised, hyper-specific aesthetic in his portraitures, the exhibition presents various artists’ interpretations of what it means to be human.
There is a similar sense of creativity in the works of Mel Bochner, Alexander Calder and Tracey Emin – in which they play around with the relationships between language, space, colours to create artworks that are explicably distinctive in style, seamlessly meshing abstract, conceptual and constructivist art. Bochner’s colourful thesaurus paintings; Calder’s “system of the universe” made alive with dancing forms and shapes; and Emin’s intimate neonlit handwritten texts – are reflections of the artists relationships’ with the world around them.
With its myriad of art movements, 20th and 21st Century Icons features artworks that are symbolic of each artists’ unique means of self-expression across the eras. Join us in exploring the ways in which these phenomenal artists have in their own distinctive ways collectively changed the course of art for generations to come.
