A Problem of How to Fly by Att Poomtangon

A PROBLEM OF HOW TO FLY
ATT POOMTANGON (THAILAND)
*An Esplanade Commission*

15 Apr–3 Jul
Esplanade – Concourse

In conjunction with A Tapestry of Sacred Music

This installation speaks of the being of the here and now. Our minds are flooded with information from birth, and it comes with it the social stigmas and preconceptions of right and wrong. We are limited by our knowledge and confined by our cultures, traditions, societies, laws and philosophies. If we can just let them all go, believe in ourselves, spread our wings and empower ourselves with confidence, we will be able to fly.

Poomtangon reimagines the atmosphere in a vast lotus pond, where the endless body of water, coloured by the lotus leaves and bright flowers, meets the blue skies of soaring birds, signifying freedom, strength and belief.

Esplanade’s Theme for April to June 2016: Listen, Listen

Listen, listen to the sound of the mind’s own utterance, within the womb of the beauty of Autumn, while the setting sun shows the red glory of her smile, hearing the bamboo flute which no one plays, listen to the reeds swaying in the breeze and the silent ripple’s song. – Chögyam Trungpa

The sound of silence is pure and beautiful yet rarely heard these days. And when we do hear it, we fear it because we don’t recognise it anymore. Come appreciate life in its pared down beauty, as we listen to our hearts and minds in the beautiful quiet through the works presented in this quarter.
