A room with a view explores the aesthetics of disappearance through the lenses of six female artists based in Hong Kong. Curated by Carol Chow Pui Ha, a researcher and lecturer at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the exhibition takes as its point of departure Ackbar Abbas’s text Hong Kong: Culture and the politics of disappearance (1997), in which he describes how buildings and spaces in Hong Kong have come to signify what no longer exists. Spanning photography, video and installation, the works capture and reconstruct vanishing identities and spaces.
A room with a view was selected as the winning proposal by the jury of the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) 2016 Curatorial Project Showcase. Jury members were Gwen Lee, Director and Founder of SIPF; Melanie Pocock, Assistant Curator, Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts; and Singaporean artist Robert Zhao Renhui.
