We are thrilled to open our new exhibition All is not as it was, nothing as it will be on the ground floor next Saturday. From idyllic rural scenes to shifting urbanscapes, this exhibition explores how artists have interpreted constantly changing environments in Singapore between the 1940s and today, and interrogates the qualities of photography alongside the more ‘traditional’ mediums of oil paint and pastel.
The featured artists are Nanyang artist Liu Kang (1911-2004) who depicted scenes from Singapore’s past, modern photographers Yip Cheong Fun (1903-1989) and Lim Kwong Ling (b. 1932) who captured the labour involved in building the city’s evolving landscape, and contemporary practitioners Lavender Chang (b. 1983) and Dave Lim (b. 1994) that explore the limits of the photographic medium to grasp the feeling of living in a gentrified home.
