The National Library Board (NLB) will be opening an exhibition in collaboration with acclaimed multidisciplinary artist and Cultural Medallion winner, Mr Tan Swie Hian, titled Anatomy of a Free Mind: Tan Swie Hian’s Notebooks and Creations. This exhibition is part of NLB’s efforts to showcase the National Library’s extensive Singapore arts collection. It is also the first time the National Library is co-curating a major exhibition with a multidisciplinary local artist of such prominence.
Held at the National Library Building from 22 November 2016 to 19 March 2017, over 100 works of art, multimedia creations and writings will be exhibited at the Level 10 Gallery, next to the existing Tan Swie Hian collection. The pieces date from the late 1970s to 2016 and includes paintings, sculptures, calligraphy, seal carvings, photographs, lithographs, multimedia performances as well as his original writings.
This is the first time Mr Tan’s notebooks are being showcased to the public. Hence the exhibition was curated in a way that showcases Mr Tan’s works, notebooks and paraphernalia in a holistic way, giving insight into his creative process and thinking behind his artworks.
