Premium Japanese art gallery Kato Art Duo proudly presents the opening of their first solo exhibition of 2015 entitled ‘Ancient Fantasy – Kukoku Tamura’. This three-month long exhibition features a wide array of original artworks by leading Japanese artist Kukoku Tamura that includes lithographs and sumi on paper. A Post-War avant-garde calligrapher, Kukoku’s works uniquely articulate both Japanese traditional calligraphy and abstract expressionism.
Hiroshi Kato, Gallery Director of Kato Art Duo said, “We are honoured and pleased to present Kukoku Tamura’s works in Kato Art Duo. Kukoku Tamura is a highly respected artist whose name has been at the forefront of the Japanese art scene for the past five decades. His paintings are outstandingly one-of-a-kind with the use of both traditional Japanese calligraphy and abstract expressionism. With his unique vision to combine calligraphy and painting, we believe that Kukoku has truly captured the very essence of Japanese culture in his works.”
Kukoku’s artworks are largely influenced by his childhood and the abstract expressionism movement. Born in 1935 in Yokohama, Kukoku was raised in a traditional Japanese dye shop run by his family. He grew up in an old-fashioned cultural environment and was exposed to colourful kimonos that his parents dyed for a living. Abstract expressionism was soon introduced in Japan in the 1950s and Kukoku, who was in his twenties during the era, was strongly influenced by the movement and incorporated it in his art of calligraphy.
